Campus History

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Newbern began classes in June 1965.  Three classes were offered:  Automotive, Drafting, and Office Occupations.  In the fall of 1965, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Electronics, Machine Shop were added.  Part-time night classes were offered in the winter of 1965 and have been offered throughout the years as dictated by demand.

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Newbern received charter authorization on November 11, 1969, when the school was previously named the Newbern State Area Vocational-Technical School.  The Tennessee Department of Vocational Education governed TCAT-Newbern until 1983 when control was transferred to the Tennessee Board of Regents by House Bill 697 and Senate Bill 746.  In 1983, with the governance change from the Tennessee Department of Vocational Education to the Tennessee Board of Regents, the name of the facility changed from the Newbern Area Vocational-Technical School to the Tennessee Technology Center at Newbern.  In 2013, the Tennessee Legislature changed the name of the schools to the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology.  The Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Newbern (TCAT-Newbern) is authorized by Public Acts Chapter #181.
