The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Northwest proudly announces that it has received official approval from the Federal Aviation Administration under FAA Part 147 to offer its Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program at the Newbern campus.

This historic milestone positions TCAT Northwest as a critical contributor to addressing the growing demand for highly skilled aviation maintenance technicians across Tennessee and the nation. The FAA-approved program will provide comprehensive training aligned with the FAA Airman Certification Standards, preparing students for careers as certified aviation maintenance technicians with pathways toward Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification.

“This certification is a significant achievement for our technical college and our community,” said Dr. Youlanda Jones, President of TCAT Northwest. “FAA approval confirms that our program meets the highest national standards and allows us to provide students with industry‑aligned training that leads directly to in‑demand, high-skilled aviation careers.”

“Receiving FAA Part 147 approval is a transformational step for TCAT Northwest and the communities we serve in West Tennessee,” said Dr. Jamie Frakes, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “This program reflects our commitment to workforce development, economic growth, and providing high-quality, industry-aligned training that leads directly to high-demand careers.”

The Aviation Maintenance Technology program will include instruction in:

  • General aviation maintenance principles
  • Airframe systems and structures
  • Powerplant systems and performance
  • Safety, inspection, and regulatory compliance

Students will gain practical experience using industry-standard equipment and training methods designed to meet FAA requirements and employer expectations. The program launch comes at a critical time. According to industry reports, Tennessee and the rest of the nation face a significant shortage of aviation maintenance technicians, with demand expected to grow substantially over the next decade. TCAT Northwest’s program is strategically positioned to support regional and national workforce needs, including those in commercial aviation, general aviation, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations.

Located in Newbern, Tennessee, TCAT Northwest offers a unique geographic advantage, serving as a workforce pipeline for major aviation and logistics hubs across West Tennessee and beyond, including Memphis and Nashville.

“This program will create amazing opportunities for our students to succeed in a dynamic industry,” Dr. Frakes added.

The Aviation Maintenance Technology program is scheduled to start Fall 2026. Prospective students and industry partners are encouraged to contact the TCAT Northwest Admission Office for more information at 731-627-2511.Top of FormBottom of Form
